Twin sister of Marketing: Technology
I have been working since 1978. I graduated from Business Administration Department in 1981. And I started working in the marketing department of a company. The computers were usually in the accounting departments when I got in.
Throughout my business life of 30 years, I have seen the screens spread on the tables (and lastly come to marketing).
I have created projects in retail banking. I have launched the installment cards. I removed point catalogues from existence and direct them to shopping online, etc… I have been the “commercial” leader of hundreds of projects. I have met hundreds of IT specialists.
I was pointed out as “the commercial person that works the best with IT” in almost all the companies I have worked for. IT teams said “ask Ugur about how we prefer to work” to the other commercial departments. In some meetings, people who just started working even thought I was from the IT team.
I have met hundreds of IT specialists, but…
I can only count 8-10 who followed the project I expected to realize to the end and knew and told me what could be done under the present conditions, and could ask “If we do this part of the project like this, we can gain this much time. If you want 100% of it, that would take 6 times more. Can you go with it?”
And I think about this joke for the others.
A man walks in the desert, and a lamb hits his foot. He opens it, and a genie gets out. The genie tells him; “I will grant you one wish. However, be careful. I was trapped in this lamb because I was misunderstood. So ask for something that I won’t misunderstand.”
The man says; “I wish I could never see my wife and her mother again.” And the genie blinds him and says “Your wish is granted.”
The man begs the genie “You made me blind. At least grant me one more wish.” The genie pities him and accepts that. The man thinks that he would cover this negativity by being more attractive. And he says: “Make me a model.”
The genie makes the man a shop-window model that we see in the store windows.
Most of the IT specialists make you a blind and shop-window model. Then they tell you; “ust as you wished”. In this time when the work terms are automated and huge profits are made with customer information because of CRM, we (marketers) should learn to work with IT.
Isn’t there any training that will teach them how to work with us?
